Columbine.
The name alone makes me think of grotesque violence, misled teenagers, assassinated bullies, innocent teachers, devastated families and a media hype that placed the blame in all the wrong places.
The Columbine High School massacre occurred on Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School in Jefferson County, Colorado. Two teenage students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, carried out a shooting rampage, killing 12 fellow students and a teacher, as well as wounding 24 others, before committing suicide.
It is considered to be the deadliest school shooting in United States history.
Yesterday, I saw this video for an independent film based on the massacre. (if you click to watch this video, please be aware of some not-work-safe content in the sidebars.)
At first, I was led to believe this was the real thing... security tape footage from Columbine itself. It was only after viewing it that I learned it was staged for an indy film. Nevertheless, I found myself haunted for the remainder of the day by the sights and sounds of this incredibly realistic video and it made me ponder what happened on that terrible day in 1999. It also made me think about my children and how unsafe the world really is. (Oh, and let's remember... something like this would never happen in Canada.)
So, here's my question for you:
Is the world really unsafe, meaning worse than it was when we were growing up, or is it just that the media, movies, TV and such makes it seem that way?

Well the Piper is hung like a Moose, so that is not him.
In terms of safety, why does this always seem to occur at Public Schools in the middle of the Country in small suburban towns.
I think the world has always been unsafe. Just now it seems the crazies are everywhere and are not afriad to show it. I believe it will only get worst as time passes. We are our own ememy which is very sad.

It is when we are growing up for sure, media can have an effect only if the kids don't have a strong character built while growing up, When you are a kid, lots of things need to be taught to you, evil nature comes with us but parents need to install the anti-evil medicine which is Character.
When you have a normal selfsteem built since your chilhood, you have no need to play cool or call the attention or do things to please others and earn their respect.
In absolute terms, the world is much safer - we no longer have two nuclear arsenals poised to strike at each other and end the world.
It relative terms, teh 24 hour news cycle has become a whore to advertising and everything is so constantly sensationalized it feels like everything is out of control.
Of course, a feeling of fear sells both advertised products (germs on your counter can kill your children!) and political platforms (only we are hyper-macho enough to protect you from the enemy!).
Ugh.
No we aren’t any less safe now, but we are less able to judge actual risk in a realistic manner. It's this same statistically retarded mentality that makes people think spending $100 a month on lottery tickets is a better idea than investing it in a retirement plan.
Safer. Much safer.
