That 'gaping hole' just looks like his cervical spine has snapped and is protruding. Like a compound fracture that you'd find when someone snaps their leg. Must have just been a forceful snap of the neck, but definitely no conspiracy.
I agree, it will be interesting to see the conspiracies that do develop.
