Gas Boycott on 5/15?

Thursday, May 10, 2007

Don't buy gas on May 15th.

You can buy it on the 13th, the 14th or even the 16th but don't buy gas on the 15th. Let's boycott the gas stations across the nation for one entire day and see what happens. Our folks did it in the early 80's, so I know we can can do this too.

What say you? Are you in? THEN FORWARD THIS INFO TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW AND LET'S GET THE WORD OUT!

NO GAS ON 5/15!

That's just lame. That wont have any impact on the oil industry at all. One whole day of not going to the gas station.....it never hits their bottom line unless the entire nation ceases to function for the entire day, reducing the total consumption of gas. Don't believe me? Read the article on MSN here.

According to research that I have done and that has been done by others, the only way we're really going to hit the gas industry is if we reduce gas consumption over-all. In order to reduce gas consumption, people are being urged to look into more fuel efficient methods, such as mass transportation, cars with higher fuel efficiency, hybrids and electric vehicles. Researches are even finally looking into the reality of hydrogen fueled vehicles after so many years of saying that it is an unstable resource to use.

However, even though we as a nation would be better off financially, economically, and environmentally by doing so, we still have the matter of other leading countries who are purchasing gas at an astonishing rate. Countries such as China and India are growing rapidly and so is their demand. That means, even if our demand decreased, the increase in other nations would continue to keep the prices where they are. PLUS.....most people fail to realize that the gas we use was purchased approximately 3 months ago. That means, in order for there to be an impact, the solution needs to be for a long period of time; not one day.

And what about airplanes? Ever stop to think about how much fuel those things use? How could we work to make those more fuel efficient?

Overall...... if we reduced the need for gas, we reduce the need for fuel refineries (one of the world's leading green house polluters). And quite frankly, that is more my concern then the price of gas. In conclusion, let's make 5/15 "fuel efficiency awareness day". I challenge the readers to do something that will lead to a more fuel efficient and cost effective tomorrow.

So, what say you?

I agree. Total consumption must be decreased to have any impact. However, even as prices have reached an average of $4, there has been no significant reduction in consumption. The price will continue to rise to what the market will bear.

My wife and I have been car free since 2002. We both use public transportation for our daily commutes. Now, having said that, it's only possible because we live and work in a city. If we move out to the burbs, we're going to have to have a car, public transportation just doesn't work out there. The best we will be able to do is one car for the household and it's going to be a hybrid. Probably the Honda Civic hybrid.

Anyway, yes, we all need to stop using V8 or V6 trucks for our daily commutes. Sadly, the only way this is going to happen is when gas is at $6 dollars or more a gallon - 3 to 4 dollars just doesn't seem to be making a change in behavior worth it.

I drive a civic now and it's a great fuel efficient commuter car. I mean, I was commuting from Gilroy to San Jose everyday so I had to have something reliable as well as efficient, that was 10 years ago when I made that decision.

And you're right about moving to the burbs. There isn't a way to travel to and from work without having a car pool or vehicle of your own. But here in Sac, there are tons of people who are able to actually bicycle there way to work because everything is on such a smaller scale. Most places are within 15 miles of where they live.

Not that I want to bike 15 miles to work....

I was strongly considering one of the electric cars or the Prius for my next vehicle but I sort of need something that will fit my tall husband as well.....ideas?

this is crap.

NO GAS on 5/15!!!!!!

~smooches~

Mal, you obviously did NOT read the entire article. I'm ashamed of your actions.

If you read a little further, you see where I say:

"That's just lame. That wont have any impact on the oil industry at all. One whole day of not going to the gas station.....it never hits their bottom line unless the entire nation ceases to function for the entire day, reducing the total consumption of gas."

What needs to be done is that our government needs to enact legislation . . . ie By 2012 all private combustion engines cars will be outlawed in the US

For a tall driver, you might want to take a look at the Toyota Camry hybrid, it gets about 40 mpg compared to the Civic Hybrid 50 mpg.

Thanks AV. I'll look into that one.

Mal,
Do we really need Uncle Sam passing more bills on how we need to run our lives?

Besides, Legislation would never do something that would threaten their own pocket books, i.e., BUSH ADMINISTRATION.

Bla!!! that will not do anything, WE are the ones who need the gas... if we fill our tanks on the 13th then what is the point?? we are not dimishing the consumption of gas we are just doing it in a different day, I fill the tank of my car 2 times a month... what difference will make that I fill it in a different date? is still 2 times a month.

I Believe one way to press over gas stations is massive bus riding and car pooling for long time. That will reduce the need of gas and
will force Gas stations to lower their prices.

but I don't mind picking a different day, just to please you.

TOYI! SHAME SHAME! That's what I said further down in the post. :)

Toyi is Malach.

OMG eh eh yeah just like Chruch and State.

It is sad that my little car which only cost $12 a week to fill a few years ago now costs $26. BTW, BJ's in Dartmouth is $2.77 a gallon.

Oh I remember those days....it would cost me $13.00 to fill mine.

I remember the days when it cost $0.98/gal before I bought my Civic. The cheapest I can find now out here is $3.359....

uhmm mine takes $32 gas here is $3.00
yet lasts almost the month for me.
