I'll tell you what the troops would think, Senator Jackass

Friday, April 20, 2007

From the AP:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday the war in Iraq is "lost," triggering an angry backlash by Republicans, who said the top Democrat had turned his back on the troops.

...

"I can't begin to imagine how our troops in the field, who are risking their lives every day, are going to react when they get back to base and hear that the Democrat leader of the United States Senate has declared the war is lost," said Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky.

Comment:

How are they going to react? I'll tell you. They are going to say: "Yeah, no shit; let's get the fuck out of here."

What a fucking hypocritical Jackass you are, Mitch McConnell, acting like you care about the feelings of the troops. If you really cared about the troops and their families you'd have vigils and ceremonies for those killed in action. You'd be there to receive the flag draped coffins. But no, we need to hide the dead soldiers and only invoke them when we have a politcal point to make.

The troops don't want to be in Iraq, they don't want to die in Iraq, and they would all be very, VERY happy to come home. They certainly don't need you to "protect" them from the words of Senator Reid. What they need is someone to protect them from President Bush and his crazy neocon cabal of right wing idiots.

The voters thought they did that in the midterm elections, but even an election doesn't seem to stop the Bush neocon war machine.

I beg to differ. Over the past three months, I have spoken with 2 Infantry and one Marine. All were recently returned from Iraq, one was going back soon.

All three expressed the same opinion:

They went, did their job with pride and would go back.

I told one of them about you AV. I did. Not your name, but just that I have this buddy on the west coast that's a vet, and wants the US to pull out.

He wanted to know what war you fought in?

I think you can figure out the rest of the conversation based on my reply.

He also gave me permission to quote him the next time it came up.

"He doesn't speak for me."

The military folks that I have spoken too (some real old school vets and some that are currently serving) have said that they may not like the war but it is their job to do as the commanding officer says and therefor, they do so with pride.

I would safely say that AV would agree with this statement regardless of his point of view on the war.....which by the way is a ridiculous war.

But please forgive me if I'm wrong, AV.

I fart on Iraq. War over.

No, these guys were not just 'following orders' and were actually quite upset that America's perception is that they don't support the war. They do. I spoke with them.

The fact that you think it's ridiculous is an opinion. These soldier did not have that opinion.

Well I know at least two soldiers who have been deployed and come back and hold the opposite opinion of the two Murk spoke with.

I guess that means soldiers, like every other American, have a wide range of views on the war and indeed AV does speak for some of them.

And, to be clear, I also went when called and did the best job I could because what I did helped fellow soldiers survive. And, if my tour had been extended, I would have stayed. Had the stop-loss not been lifted and I had been recalled, I would have mobilized again. Not because I believe the war was right or that I believe the administration knows what it is doing or because I am some twit who mindlessly "follows orders" - but because of my fellow soldiers.

I, however, like many colleagues, did resign or retire when the stop loss was lifted because invading and occupying Iraq was and is legally, morally, and strategically wrong.

For those service men and women who remain in the military and proudly serve, I salute them and hope they return home safely. In fact, I wish everyone who was a supporter of the war actually went and fought in it. Nothing would make me happier.

AV

I fart again, war in Afghanistan over.

Yup. AV does represent some of the soldiers views. Some. Not all.

And as for sending all people who support the war into combat...

That's why it's an all volunteer military. I told you when you signed up, as I did with two other friends, that some day you'd be owned by the government and they'd be running your life. Now you're bitter because you thought it would all be PT and Basic Training and they made you pay them back in spades.

That's not my fault, and not my choice.

By your logic, all Americans should go into combat before they can vote. I can't support an idea without getting on the frontlines?

Please! That's as naive as it is stupid.

In an ideal world, all good people would be millionaires and nobody would have to work anymore. I'd love that too.

But I wouldn't destroy democracy to see it.

Apperntly, you would.

Well, now you're just stretching to try to create some kind of conflict here. You had to read alot into "In fact, I wish everyone who was a supporter of the war actually went and fought in it. Nothing would make me happier" to get your last comment.

I wish everyone who was an advocate for the war would volunteer and go fight in Iraq. I'm pretty sure I've said that a draft Army is an awful idea. Anyone who has served in a professional all volunteer Army knows it is vastly superior to anything you could get from conscripts.

I also wish that more of our political leadership had military experience, but that doesn't mean I think there should be a law restricting elective office to veterans.

And to be clear, I'm not bitter about anything the Army did with me, my experience with the Army was something I will always be proud of. What I am angry and bitter about is what this Administration has done to the Army, which included me. Not only have they destroyed a functioning nation in Iraq, but they are on the verge of severly weakening the Army. All those people who have been recruited under the lowered recruiting standards tend to be another factor in persuading more experienced and higher qualified troops to leave when they have the chance.

I just hate all the money that has been put into this "war", in my eyes we could have done bigger and better things.

I support our tropps, but don't support this "war". Am I a bad guy now? ~wonders~
