The problem with Generation Y.

Saturday, March 31, 2007

Malach is from Generation X.
I can recall things like no internet, nor cell phones, no PC's is every home, no Cable Television, Rotary Phones, the Cold War, The USSR, etc. The first time I was required to write a paper on a PC was my second year of college (1992), before that I used a typewriter. I remember my parents first cell phone, it consisted of a huge ass phone, with an attached battery briefcase. I remember when MTV only played videos and the NBA Dream Team always won the gold.

Perhaps I am just at that "When I was your age stage". But I have a real problem with generation Y, or as I call them the "internet generation", and I only figured out today what my problem with them is.

Malach runs a men's softball team, and on this team there is a group of us who are my age (35ish), and then there is another group that is 18-25. We are all friends, or friendly enough with each other, and mostly get along. Malach basically manages the team, does all the administrative work, and handles the team money. He is actually the one teams founder. Every year, we have a pre-season meeting, to go over administrative stuff, new rules, new teams, collect team dues, and brainstorm about the team and team issues. So, Malach gave the team 3 weeks notice to show up to this usually hour long meeting. Some people informed me they would not be there, fine.

Now today was the day of the meeting, and the wife informs me in the morning that all of the younger portion of the team was not going to the meeting. They did not call or e-mail me. So basically the 6 members of the team around my age showed up, and the rest of the team, again who had 3 weeks notice, did not, only telling my wife, and not me, the night before. Now granted, this is not life or death, or work, but still . . .

I look across at those that are 25 and younger and this is what I see. People who don't care about responsibility, and if the situation interferes with "playtime" they aren't interested. At my full time job, hardly anyone working there under the age of 27. Those under that age who have been hired have all been terminated because of the exact above issue. They don't care, they don't take responsibility, and do stuff like the above. They don't know the proper protocol for interacting with real people ... they are so used to the internet, e-mail, text and instant messaging. They are so used to socializing over technology, they don't know the rules of real socialization. And it is not just locally, I see it everyday from a very young MySpace generation.

And it is not just softball and work. Look at sexual relationships, men and women have this "hooking up" attitude about sex. One night stands among those under the age of 25 are very common, and girls are as bad as the guys. It is really sad. I see it to, the partying, the stuff I did in college, my just out of college friends party like they are still in college. Think nothing of drinking most nights of the week, and think nothing of drunk driving.

I don't know, maybe I am just pissed cause I feel that people older that 18 should have more responsibility for themselves. It is all instant gratification with little care for other people. I see it in this generation, i see it my younger clients. Maybe I am just getting old.

I am Malach and back in my day . . .

The above is most of the reason that I hate teenagers. I see them turning into the people mentioned in your post and it upsets me to see people lump me into the same category as them through circumstances beyond my control.

However, a trend I see with these idiots around me is the common lack of parenting they have received. The digital world has spoiled the parents as well. Don't feel like accepting the responsibility of parenthood? Sit your kid down in front of the TV and give him or her unbridled access to the 500 channels of God knows what. It'll keep him or her quiet while you cook dinner. Meanwhile, they're seeing casual sex, skirting responsibility, murder, violence, and given today's average TV family, a lack of strong unity and upbringing.

The young Americans running around with loose morals and looser waistbands learned it from somewhere. Many of them have unmarried (not divorced) mothers who condone and take part in random, meaningless sex. Speaking of which, Piper, you never called like you said you would.

A shocking percentage of my friends' parents know exactly what they do, and for reasons beyond me they allow it to continue. I know people who do drugs, have sex, and drive home drunk, and their parents know all about it. From what they tell me, though, their parents would feel bad punishing them because the parents do the exact same thing.

I'm not trying to shift blame here; I'm simply throwing a different perspective into the ring, one of a person who is expected to follow up on Malach's despised age group. Sure, it is their fault, but it wouldn't be right to say that it is ALL their fault. You can't expect someone to live in a way that is contrary to all they've ever known. It is a parent's responsibility to raise their kid to make right decisions and avoid things that are potentially detrimental to their health, growth, etc. With the recent decline in moral fiber in all age groups, though, responsible decision making is becoming a lost art.

well, i understand alot of where your coming from. i was suspended from UMass Amherst. ZooMass carries the unfortunate rep as a party school, and it truly is one. I didn't get lost up in the partying though. I got lost up in myself.

I would spend my time, working, or getting addicted to the various games I would buy and then play, all to avoid the parties. I see this issue with alot of people my age and it makes me feel like shit.

I don't know if you read my blog on MySpace or not, http://blog.myspace.com/jonnydavidsoncomedy , but I ranted about how Hollywood has no role models. Lindsay Lohan is the same age as myself, yet she's been into and out of rehab more times than i've been pardoned for traffic violations (and that number is 1.) It pisses me off too.

But that's why I've vowed to get off my ass. To become a role model when I'm famous, albeit a controversial one due to my openly bisexuality and my crossdressing alter-ego. Acting and Hollywood is a tough business. I'm cutting classes just to do a paid film shoot on Monday. But I realize that that's what I want to do. I'm not going to make money off of it right away, in fact, I may never make money off of it.

But the reality of it is, if I can hold a full time job, doing whatever i get hired to do, and afford to live on my own, then haven't I already surpassed the majority of ppl in my generation?

Well, I'll end my counter-rant. But it's nice to know I'm not the only person who is disappointed in my generation.

I agree with Hojo, parenting as a whole is atrocious, I see it in my own neighborhood, comparing my kids to kids their age.

My kids aren't allowed to do whatever the hell the they want to, other kids are.

and the people that go to the mettings are the original players that tells u something!!!!

Anonymous said...

Also people who are young aren't all like your friends, so don't base that judgement about that age group just on your team!!!! lol
Some people that age are very responisable....

And HAHAHAHA would be?

And here I thought "7 comments" meant that people had 7 mature constructed responses to the topic at hand.

And then I realized, "Hey, we're on the internet. People on the internet are anonymous, and they think that gives them license to spam." My mistake.

oh this is an old topic, well I do understand that there are always good people anywhere, but yes there is a situation comming up with incoming generations & is that family values had been canned, many reasons... different ways to believe life should be, parents that think school is the one who has to educate their kids in their morals ( (wrong.. school teach you data, values are taught at home and by you Papi & Momy) but then who cares, some parents are more worried to get into their new lovers & personal happiness(forgetting that once they comit to the responsibility of being a parent), they pay no attention to their kids that are screaming for some atention, eh eh when kids turn 14 is too late to try to do something, is too late to try to sit and listen...sorry Dad the boy don't want to talk to you anymore (he had been trying to talk to you since 13 years ago), now the boy want to talk to his friends who actually listen but are not wise enough to give the greatest advise, the kid doesn't feel safe under your care anymore, he feels safe sitting in front of the PC talking to million of people that he calls "friends" but that he doesn't even know their real name or their real height or face, but there he is trying to survive a cruel society that adores them today and kick their butts tomorrow.

Why do you think I quit your softball team?

The whole 'everyone plays' metality. I wanted to take a year, sit the bench, learn to bat and pitch but...

no one showed up and I was forced to play AND THEN mercilessly picked out by a small group of punks for my inadequate skills and how "he shouldn't even be pitching".

No shit, Sherlock! Who else did we have? That and the fact that no one else practiced and expected to play.

Almost everyone sucked skill wise and attitude wise and we won what? 2 games?

Yeah, like I wanted to be on a team with a bunch of over privelidge Gen Y's who only know how to criticize and not suck it up and do their job.

No offense to Kernsie or Rod intended.

I wanted to ;earn to play and play once I was good enough.

It sucked that it was the reverse...

Notice since the Murk left, we were on win away from the championship

Anonymous said...

How many years did that take?

I'm only backing up your point. Nothing against you or 'the good guys'.

And we were no where near the championship when I played and I could have cared less if the attitudes didn't suck.

Tell me they didn't.

I you mean to imply that I was the reson you didn't win the championship that first year, fuck you, but you're way off.

I sucked horribly and was played every game when I wnated the better players to teach me while I watched and learned.

All I learned how to do was throw aluminum bats and swear in front of little kids.

I'm not sure who you're defending here, me or the same idiots you just ripped a new asshole.

We miss our psycho!

Anonymous said...

Fuck you. I'm playing. When does practice start, bitch?

One rule. I'll play when I'm good at it. I'll only sub under emergencies and I'm giving shit back to anyone who fucks with me.

I seem to recall back when I was in my early 20's that my fellow twenty somethings were a bunch of cunts. I see no change.

You're imagining shit Malach. Just like the Babyboomers were imagining shit when they constantly ragged on us Gen-Xers for being a bunch of slackers with no direction in life.

Guess what? We're running shit now.

Every generation goes through this, and it's stupid because all they need to do is look at history to see that Those Damn Kids always existed and always annoyed the old farts.

Yes, you're an old fart.

That's because teenagers and early twentysomethings are annoying immature twats. Then they get older and become annoying self satisfied twats and then they get older still and become annoying crusty old twats.

Nice! Agreed.

I was a big ass fuck up until age 30.

Now I run a Galactic Empire from my garage.

Let's fucking hit some softballs and win us some gold!

I don't completely agree with that and I will tell you why. When I was that age, OK, I screwed up in college, learned my lessons, and then became a good citizen. I also respected things like appointments, loyalty, promises, and social norms. Perhaps I was the odd duck out, but I find this upcoming has none of this.

I agree with Malach, "everything is normal" lol screw that...

there was no rules in the past about bringing a knife to school, whY? because in no head was present to bring a knife to school, nobody was trying to harm an old friend.

and what about having sex in Middle school? in the classroom?

I have a friend that had to take his boy out of Middle school and put him in into home schooling, the boy was being acussed of originating fights in the restroom, when the boy said that all he ever foght was his way out of the restroom safe from his schoolmates trying to gang on him and rape him... well you know what school didn't believe him...(I think the principal should have put somes security in the restrooms, but no he preferred to believe the gang that looks like a gang and act like a gang inside the school)
and this is only one case of many that take place inside school restrooms.

All this things are not normal, all these things are happeneing in middle school, high school is for shut outs. Thers is so much hate remarked on this new generation that is raising out of control.

Yeah, school are a major issue, a lot has to do with funding.

Toyi said...

^ That is also true, lots of people I know (parents) comment about all these issues...
another case, there is this school that don't give homework, there was a gov evaluation comming out... they started pushing the kids limits trying to make them memorize in few day what they were supposed to do in homework for almost the entire semester...kids are not ready theirs minds have been lazing around for quite some time and they expect great results to get the Gov funds... Now kids are the ones with problems, kids are the ones not responding & they need special help... yeah right!

Some of these comments just prove your point. I think our generation (30's) is guilty too, and possibly responsible for things spinning out of control for Y. When we were teens you couldn't get a job if you had a nose ring or tatoos, but by the mid-90's I think it became mandatory. The lack of credibility I've experienced with internet users is a real turnoff. You meet people you've talked to online and find out they probably googled half their knowledge they used in conversations online, because they don't have any real learned knowledge or conversation skills. (And if you read this and don't know what I mean by real learned knowledge, then I'm talking about you.) Kids all want to be stars without putting in their time, and when they leave their spoiled childhoods behind they become frustrated that things aren't handed to them on a silver platter. Maybe it's the same for every generation, but we didn't have the internet to go and take our frustrations out on total strangers.

"Guess what? We're running shit now."
And doing a great job of it.
"lol"
If a twat laughs out loud and there is no one to hear it...
"I'm giving shit back to anyone who fucks with me."
Does he talk like that in person? I hope somebody fucked with him real good. It's tough being a big boy.

Not when some of the most experienced sorcerers among us cant even control her. Once she found it, she turned it toward his breath, met his lips with hers. Most commonly, those who were truemated fell in love, sometimes instantly sometimes it took centuries. The noise from the spectators filled the wideopen space, excitement building as oiled bodies grappled. His were smiling down at her, pride brimming in the swirling red and black. That spell shouldnt have been so hard. She shook her head. Gala teased, tossing a floor pillow at him. Maybe she should run and change. Eyrhaen bobbed her head, loose hair falling forward over her shoulders. Maybe shed broken that too. At first she didnt understand, but then there was Brevins flinch. What do you say, Eyrie? He growled, lips slanting over hers as he thrust again. She caught sight of Tykir and Brevin kissing behind him, but not much more. His attention drifted down to watch as she wrapped fingers around his cock. She could have enslaved the raedjour. We enjoyed each other, but the whole aim was to see how Eyrhaen would react. And Im hardly one to object, given that Im truemated to another. She twisted her grip as she slid her fist from root to tip.

She purred as he pulled out, rolling onto her side as he moved aside. Radin, however, turned to face her with a bright smile that showed clean white teeth. Unfortunately, that included using Eyrhaen as a lodestone, both for Herself and for Her people. Lanthan slumped in the sand, one fist pounding dust as Arkir thrust into him again. He hadnt used that soothing tone for many nights.
