So yeah, there's some sort of writing contest in my area. I think I'm going to enter. Don't really know what to write though. There's two choices: short story and essay.
I'm thinking about making a short story about a teenage suicide. At the outset, you're reading the kid's note to the people who found him, until a pleading woman interrupts the narrative. Then you realize that he's still in the process of writing it, and it ends with a bang. Morbid, I know... But I really want to emphasize the futility of suicide. I'm just afraid that it'll be considered too sad though. ><"
Oh, oh, and for the essay portion, I'm thinking of a counterpoint to the assumption that everything is bad for you (Video games, television, music, etc.) Still don't know how to start it. =\

The short story sound interesting, rather Poe-esque
How can you start? well people that want to suicide have a sad taste for life, they are full of insatisfaction as many enough to take them to think nothing in life is worthy or that they are not worthy...
i think the short story idea sounds great. sure, sad, but interesting way of developement. people find the note, start reading it, transition to the kid writing it. nice idea

A teenager writing a suicide note? I mean, not to put too fine a point on it, but how many of those do you think the judges will be looking at? If it were a derivitive writing contest, you might have a shot. But for a creative writing contest, you might want to be, well, more creative.

If there is one thing less creative for a teenager to do than commit suicide, it's masturbate. Even using a primate.
